Privacy Policy

What Seen collects, why, who sees it, and the choices you have.

Last updated October 28, 2026

The short version

  • Your phone number is how you sign in. It’s never on your profile and other members never see it.
  • Other members see what you put on your profile, your age (not your birth date), and your city or country, never your exact location.
  • We don’t record your calls and we don’t read your phone’s contacts.
  • Your messages are stored on our servers so they reach the other person on every device. People on our team only look at them when it’s needed to keep members safe, such as to review a report.
  • We use service providers to run Seen, and may use advertising partners in the future. We never give advertisers your messages, your phone number or your precise location.
  • You can delete your account at any time in Settings. Your profile, photos and videos go with it.

1. Who we are

Seen is a dating app where you talk before you match. It is run by [Company legal name], a company based in Quebec, Canada (“Seen”, “we”, “us”). We are responsible for the personal information described in this policy.

The person in charge of protecting personal information at Seen can be reached at support@tryseen.ca.

2. Where this policy applies

This policy applies to the Seen app, the website at tryseen.ca, profile links shared from the app, and any time you contact us. Together we call these the “service”.

It also covers features we add later, such as paid features, ads, verification or new ways to meet people. When a new feature uses your information in a way this policy doesn’t describe, we’ll update the policy first (see Changes to this policy).

3. Information we collect

What you give us

  • Account information: your phone number, which we use to sign you in and to make sure everyone on Seen is a real person.
  • Profile information: your first name, birth date, gender, who you’d like to meet and the age range you’re open to, what you’re looking for, your bio, when you’re free to call, and optional details such as your height, work, education, languages, interests, religion, whether you drink or smoke, and whether you have or want children.
  • Photos, videos and voice introductions you add to your profile. Before anything is uploaded, the app removes hidden details such as where and when it was taken.
  • Where you’d like to meet people: near you, in your country or anywhere in the world. If you choose near you or your country, the app turns your phone’s approximate position into a city, an area of about a kilometre and a country. If you choose anywhere in the world, we keep the last country your phone was found in, or your phone number’s country if it never was. We don’t keep your precise location.
  • What you send other members: Seen requests, messages, voice and video messages, reactions and call times you schedule.
  • Reports, the details you add to them, and messages to our support team.

What we collect when you use Seen

  • Your activity: the Seen requests you send and receive, your prematches and matches, who you call and when, how long calls last, what you choose after a call, the profiles you save, your favourites, and people you block or report.
  • How you use Discovery: which profiles you’re shown, how long you look at them, which photos and videos you open, and which profiles you open or save. We use this to decide what to show you next.
  • Device information: your phone’s model and system, the app’s version and language, notification tokens so we can reach your phone, and diagnostic information when the app crashes or runs slowly.
  • Usage information: which screens you open and actions such as sending a request or finishing onboarding, and an approximate location worked out from your IP address.
  • Your IP address when you ask for a sign-in code, to stop abuse of our sign-in system.

What we get from others

  • Other members, when they report you, message you or schedule a call with you.
  • Our SMS provider, which tells us whether your number can receive codes.
  • If we offer paid features, Apple or Google tells us what you bought; we never receive your card details.
  • If we show ads or advertise Seen elsewhere, advertising partners may tell us how an ad performed, for example that someone installed Seen after seeing one.

Features we may add

If we offer photo, selfie or ID verification, we’ll collect the images you submit and the result of the check. Some checks create a map of your face, which may be biometric information. We’ll only do this with your express consent, and we’ll tell you how long we keep it before you start.

Sensitive information

Some profile details can reveal sensitive things about you, such as your religion, your gender, or your sexual orientation through who you’d like to meet. Many of them are optional. If you add them, you agree that we use them to run Seen and show them on your profile as described here.

4. How we use your information

  • To run Seen: create your account, show your profile, deliver Seen requests, messages and calls, send you notifications, and keep your account secure.
  • To recommend people: we rank profiles in Discovery using your preferences, your location, what you and others do on Seen, and the details on profiles. Where you’d like to meet people also decides who you see and who can see you. This may use automated systems and models trained on how people use Seen.
  • To share news from Seen: show you posts and send you messages from Seen’s official accounts, chosen by your gender, age, what you’re looking for and the app’s language. We also use that chat to tell you what came of a report you made, or why you were warned.
  • To keep members safe: review reports, remove content that breaks our Terms of Service, warn or ban members, stop banned people from coming back, and prevent fraud and spam. Automated tools may help us find content or behaviour to review.
  • To improve Seen: understand how features are used, fix problems, test changes and build new features.
  • To talk to you: answer your questions, and send you notices about your account and the service.
  • For ads and marketing: if we show ads, to choose and measure them, and to advertise Seen on other apps and websites. Where the law requires your consent for personalised ads, we’ll ask for it first, and you can change your mind at any time.
  • For paid features, if we offer them: provide what you bought and handle refunds.
  • To follow the law: respond to valid legal requests, keep the records the law requires, and defend our rights.

If we ever make a decision about you based only on automated processing, we’ll tell you, and you can ask us to explain it and to have a person review it.

5. What other members can see

  • Your profile: your first name, your age, your city, your photos and videos, and the details you add. People in another country also see your country, and if you meet people anywhere in the world, they see only your country. Since people can choose to see only those within a certain distance, someone could work out roughly how far away you are, but never your exact location. Your phone number and birth date are never shown.
  • Your calls and messages are seen and heard by the person you share them with. They can take screenshots, so share what you’re comfortable with.
  • If you delete your account, messages you already sent stay in the other person’s chat, marked as from a deleted account, until they delete the chat or their own account.
  • Your favourites are private. When you report someone, they aren’t told who reported them.

6. How we share your information

We share personal information only as described here.

  • With service providers who run parts of Seen for us and may only use it to do that work. Today they include DigitalOcean (servers and database), Cloudflare (photo, video and audio storage), Twilio (sign-in codes by SMS), LiveKit (calls), Apple and Google (notifications), Sentry (crash reports) and PostHog (usage analytics). We may change or add providers for the same purposes.
  • With advertising partners, if we show ads or advertise Seen: limited information such as your device’s advertising ID, an approximate location, your age range, gender and how you use the app, to show and measure ads. Where the law requires your consent for this, we’ll ask first. We never give advertisers your messages, your phone number or your precise location.
  • With Apple and Google, if you buy something in the app.
  • With other companies that are part of Seen’s business now or later, for the purposes in this policy.
  • If Seen is involved in a merger, sale, financing or reorganisation, with the people involved, under confidentiality, and with whoever takes over the service, who will have to respect this policy.
  • With police, courts or regulators, when the law requires it or when we believe in good faith it’s needed to protect someone’s safety, prevent fraud or defend our rights.
  • With anyone else, when you ask us to or agree to it.

We may also share information that has been combined or de-identified so it no longer identifies you.

7. Where your information is stored

Our servers, and those of some of our providers, are in the United States, so your information is stored and processed outside Quebec and Canada. When it is, we make sure it’s protected in a way that meets Quebec and Canadian law, including through contracts with our providers. While it’s abroad, the authorities there may be able to access it under their laws.

8. How long we keep it

We keep your information while your account is open and only as long as we need it for the reasons in this policy.

  • When you delete your account, your profile, photos, videos, Seen requests, calls and preferences are deleted right away, and your files are removed from storage shortly after.
  • Messages you sent stay in the other person’s chat until they delete it or their account.
  • To keep members safe, we keep reports, blocks and bans linked to a coded version of your phone number, which can’t be turned back into the number. This stops people who were banned, or who delete their account to avoid a report, from starting over.
  • Sign-in code requests are kept for a day, and Discovery history for up to a year.
  • Waitlist details are kept until we invite you to Seen, or until you ask us to remove them.
  • Crash reports and analytics are kept for a limited time by our providers, and some records are kept longer when the law requires it or to settle a dispute.

9. Your choices and rights

  • See and change your information: most of it is on your profile and in Settings. To change your birth date, or for a copy of the information we hold about you, write to us.
  • Delete your account in Settings, at any time.
  • Control permissions: location, camera, microphone, photos and notifications can be turned off in your phone’s settings. Some features won’t work without them.
  • Ads: if we show personalised ads, you’ll be able to turn them off, and you can limit ad tracking in your phone’s settings.
  • Withdraw your consent, and ask us to stop using your information for a purpose, subject to the law and our contracts.
  • Get your information in a common format to move it to another service.

To make a request, write to support@tryseen.ca. We may need to confirm it’s you, and we’ll answer within 30 days. If you’re not satisfied with our answer, you can complain to the Commission d’accès à l’information du Québec or the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.

10. How we protect it

Information travels between your phone and our servers encrypted. On your phone, your chats are kept in an encrypted database, and on our side we store only coded versions of the keys that keep you signed in. Only people who need it for their work can reach your information.

No system is perfectly secure. If a breach puts you at risk of serious harm, we’ll tell you and the authorities, as the law requires.

11. Age

Seen is for adults 18 and over. We don’t knowingly collect information from anyone younger. If we learn that someone under 18 has an account, we close it. If you think someone on Seen is under 18, report their profile.

12. Our website and cookies

tryseen.ca saves your language choice in a cookie for a year. We also use PostHog to understand how the site is used, which can record your visit, such as what you click and scroll. Anything you type is hidden from these recordings.

If you join the waitlist, we keep your email, the city you chose, your age range, your gender, who you’d like to meet, the phone you use, your language and who invited you. We use them only to tell you when Seen opens near you and to plan where it opens next. Write to support@tryseen.ca to be taken off the list.

If we add advertising cookies or similar tools to the website, we’ll ask for your consent first where the law requires it.

13. Changes to this policy

Seen will change, and this policy will change with it. We’ll post every new version here with its date.

If a change significantly affects how we use your information, we’ll tell you in the app or by notification before it takes effect. Where the law requires your consent for something new, such as personalised ads or verification, we’ll ask for that separately, so you won’t need to accept this policy again. If you keep using Seen after a change takes effect, the updated policy applies to you.
